Italy's Tuscany - Coast and Culture

Tuscany has long held a special place in the hearts of British visitors, who find its gentle landscapes of tree-clad hills and red-roofed, sun-baked buildings both uplifting and relaxing. Its jewel, of course, is the peerless city of Florence, closely followed by ancient Pisa, with its incomparable clutch of spectacular buildings. Marina di Pietrasanta is a beach resort on the Versilia Riviera, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, 8km north of Viareggio. The sea, beach (stretching for over 5km), pinewoods and mountains that surround the resort bestow a tranquil air, whilst the resort itself offers plenty to see and do for the visitor. The shoreline is home to a variety of bars and cafes, which overlook the wide sandy beaches. A visit to the nearby, inland medieval town of Pietrasanta (which claims to be the artistic capital of the Versilia region) is a must for that original Tuscan experience. Here we discover elegant shops, artists and sculptors amongst the wooden shutters and ochre-washed buildings in the deep alleyways that radiate from Piazza del Duomo. We include visits to historic Lucca, famous Pisa, the medieval towns of San Gimignano and Siena, and we also offer the opportunity to visit Florence with a guided walking tour. |

Excursions
LUCCA AND PISA One of the oldest cities in Tuscany, and the home of composer Puccini, Lucca offers a tangle of narrow, cobbled streets, laced with churches, chapels and pretty piazzas. Mention Pisa and it's impossible for the famous Leaning Tower not to spring to mind. Situated in Campo dei Miracoli, the medieval bell tower is part of Pisa's famous architectural trio, harking back to its former glory days. Alongside the ‘Tower’ is the equally impressive Duomo (cathedral) and the Baptistery.
FLORENCE - WITH 2-HOUR GUIDED WALKING TOUR (OPTIONAL EXCURSION) Visit the birthplace of the Renaissance, a veritable treasure-house of art and architecture. Of all the great Italian cities, this is one of the best-loved. The huge terracotta dome of the cathedral was designed by Brunelleschi to dwarf the buildings of ancient Greece and Rome, and it still dominates the skyline today. Enjoy a walk to the Piazzale Michelangelo, where you will be able to look out over the entire city spread along the banks of the Arno. Shop for jewellery on the famous Ponte Vecchio; join art-lovers from around the world at the Uffizi, Bargello and Accademia; and linger over coffee in the Piazza della Signoria, the impressive city square. Cost £32 per person (please request at time of booking).
SAN GIMIGNANO AND SIENA Join our coach for an excursion to San Gimignano, a delightful little village, quietly monumental, enticingly rural and boasting a stunning hilltop of towers evoking the true appearance of medieval Tuscany. We will also visit charming Siena with an array of fine architecture and blessed with beautiful vistas for your pleasure. |
