Ireland's Beautiful West Coast - 2012
|
| with Connemara and the Cliffs of Moher... |
|
Undiscovered, unspoilt, unhurried and uncrowded, the enchanting west coast of Ireland provides the perfect place to blow away the cobwebs of everyday life. Offering a soothing antidote of gentle, rolling hills and green mountains, with atmospheric towns and villages, and formidable stretches of coastline, this is Ireland's poetry-inspiring scenery at its best. We visit Galway City, lying on the banks of the River Corrib, and a haven to historic sights and narrow streets with restaurants and shops. We also take in the stunning Cliffs of Moher, the legendary Burren and the market town of Clifden, framed by the striking ‘Twelve Bens’ mountains... |

Itinerary
Day 1: Travel to Pembrokeshire for our afternoon sailing to Ireland. On arrival at Rosslare we make for our overnight hotel, with dinner included. Day 2: A full Irish breakfast sets us up for a day touring through the delightful Irish countryside, passing by the Galty Mountains and Tipperary, and on to Limerick and Bunratty Village. Bunratty is synonymous with its world-famous 15th century Bunratty Castle, the West of Ireland's most visited attraction. The village offers excellent shopping (including Avoca Handweavers and Bunratty Village Mills), restaurants and a number of pubs, including the famous 'Durty Nellys'. We move on to our hotel, arriving later this afternoon. Time to relax before dinner this evening. Days 3 - 5: At leisure with two included excursions. On our free day we have time to enjoy the village of Lisdoonvarna itself, with an olde worlde charm, historic buildings and some fascinating attractions, such as the Spectacle Bridge spanning the Aille river gorge to the Burren Smokehouse, where staff demonstrate the traditional method of smoking salmon. Full Irish breakfasts and dinners daily. Day 6: Having enjoyed breakfast and bid farewell to our hosts, we set off on the drive to the east of Ireland, stopping at the famous Rock of Cashel. Cashel, with its well-preserved ecclesiastical remains, is one of Ireland's spectacular landmarks, rising above the surrounding plain and dominating the land route south. We continue to our overnight hotel, with dinner this evening. Day 7: Breakfast and we join our ship and return to the British mainland. Arrive home later today. |

Excursions
GALWAY AND CONNEMARA Breakfast and an early start today as we head for the prosperous city of Galway, with its fabulous bay setting. Perhaps take a walk along the Old Quays to visit the Spanish Arch, or take time to wander amidst the maze of narrow streets, with their shops, pubs and cafes, with a few moments relaxing in Eyre Square. We move on into the wild landscape of the Connemara Mountains. Keep a lookout for the little Connemara ponies, which roam around the settlements at Maam Cross, Recess and Ballynahinch. We reach the Atlantic coast at Clifden, watched over by the ‘Twelve Bens’ mountains. Clifden, known as the ‘capital of Connemara’, is a delightful market town and ideal for a short stop. We return to our hotel in time for dinner this evening.
THE BURREN AND CLIFFS OF MOHER Our Irish breakfast sets us up for today’s tour, featuring some fascinating and contrasting natural phenomena. The region known as The Burren is an amazing two hundred square-mile limestone ‘moonscape’ wilderness. A unique area of strange beauty and mystery, it is one of the world’s prime nature reserves and of great interest to geologists and botanists. A journey through this fascinating region includes a visit to Kilfenora, a charming village, famous for its traditional Irish music and its Celtic Crosses. We drive along the coast, with a stop at the mighty Cliffs of Moher, a breathtaking sight whatever the weather. If it is fine, we should see Galway, Kerry and the Isles of Aran, and if it is not, we are sure to experience the tremendous power of the forces of nature, as the Atlantic Ocean relentlessly bombards the rocks below. Admission is included to the Visitor Centre (access to the Atlantic Edge is optional (around 5 euros per person)). Return to our hotel for dinner. |
