Christmas in the Ahr Valley

The Ahr Valley town of Altenahr is magnificently situated amidst wild and romantic scenery. Famous for its wine, the town is a superb base from which to explore the delights of the area. Truly picturesque towns and villages are home to half-timbered buildings, whilst wonderful rock formations, ruins, idyllic castles and picturesque terraced vineyards all add to the atmosphere. The Ahr Valley enjoys a comfortably mild climate.

    Itinerary

Itinerary
Day 1: Local departure and a lunchtime crossing to Calais. Early evening arrival in Altenahr for our four night stay.
Days 2-4: Free to relax and enjoy our included excursions and a day at leisure. Breakfasts and dinners included.


Christmas Eve' - Bonn and Königswinter: We visit Bonn, the friendly, relaxed city on the Rhine which became West Germany`s temporary capital in 1949. The city is blessed with excellent museums, among which is the Beethoven Haus which exhibits the work, letters, paintings and last grand piano of the Bonn born Ludwig van Beethoven. After lunch we make our way to the riverside town of Königswinter famed for the Drachenfels (Dragons Rock) ruin. We return to the hotel driving through the heart of the Ahr Valley and its vineyards.
Christmas Day: Enjoy time at leisure to explore before returning to the hotel to enjoy the festivities. Altenahr is a picturesque town located on the River Ahr in a narrow part of the valley that could almost be considered a gorge, thus creating a magnificent landscape. The whole town was once fortified but only remnants of the former walls and towers remain. The castle ruins of Burg Ahr, built around 1100, situated high above the town, offer a spectacular view of the surrounding area.
Boxing Day: The Moselle Valley, Cochem and Bernkastel-Kues. We drive by way of the Moselle River today followings its course passing many delightful villages and stopping in the 16th Century town of Cochem. We continue to follow the valley to our second stop of the day in the famous wine town of Bernkastel-Kues.

Day 5: Depart after breakfast for a late afternoon crossing back to the UK and continue to your original departure point in the evening.
