Princetown is the highest village within Dartmoor National Park and just about at its heart. It is also the home of Dartmoor Prison, once incarcerating category A criminals such as the Kray brothers. But Princetown is now known for much else. Dartmoor Brewery is situated within the village, concocting beers such as Jail Ale and Dartmoor IPA. For more inspiration and a wander around the gallery, head to the High Moorland Visitor Centre right in the centre of the village. There are also a good few places to eat, so you certainly won’t go hungry.
Tavistock is the main town of Dartmoor's western moor. It is an exceptionally attractive town owing as much to some fine Victorian architecture as to its picturesque location on the banks of the river Tavy. It was the establishing of a Benedictine Abbey on the banks of the River Tavy that put Tavistock on the map although it had to be rebuilt before being turned into the West Country's most important Benedictine Abbey around the turn of the last millenium after it was destroyed by Vikings. Now a busy market town, there is no shortage of shops and cafes and it is also home to a purpose built pannier market, possibly the best in the region.
Dawlish is a traditional seaside town with a wonderful golden sand beach on its doorstep. The town offers a range of amusements and is centred upon The Lawn and Brook, which is home to the famous black swans. Dawlish boasts a long sandy beach which is perfect for summer day swimming, exploring rock pools or sand castle building. Dawlish Town Beach is just a short walk from the town centre and full of golden sand. The town has plenty of interesting shops and a brook that runs through the centre of a wide open green, The Lawn, which is great for games and picnics.
