Tavistock is the main town of Dartmoor's western moor. It is an exceptionally attractive town owing as much to some fine Victorian architecture as to its picturesque location on the banks of the river Tavy. It was the establishing of a Benedictine abbey on the banks of the River Tavy that put Tavistock on the map although it had to be rebuilt before it turned into the West Country’s most important Benedictine Abbey around the turn of the last millenium after it was destroyed by Vikings. Now a busy market town, there is no shortage of shops and cafes and it is also home to a purpose built pannier market, possibly the best in the region.
Cotehele Tudor House (entrance included)
The award-winning Cotehele is a wonderfully preserved Tudor house filled with stories and legends, situated deep within the Tamar Valley. Its granite and slatestone walls contain intimate chambers adorned with tapestries, original furniture and armour. The new museum at the Quay forms part of a complex of historic buildings as well as the home of the restored sailing barge Shamrock.
