This tour is a real treat, based at the historic Hallmark Hotel set right in the heart of Chester. Steeped in history, Chester itself is a treasure trove of fascinating sights but our included excursions make this a trip like few others. Contrast the heritage of Chester, Plas Newydd House and the only standard gauge steam railway in North Wales with the throbbing hum of Liverpool, one of England most exciting and vibrant cities.

This lovely tour is based in Chester, perhaps the best-preserved city in England, with its galleried streets, Roman Wall, Tudor houses, and unique medieval shopping experience at the famous ‘Rows’. This is a great base and fascinating city where you can truly combine a love of history with some truly inspiring shopping opportunities!

Hallmark Hotel, Chester The Queen

Walk through the magnificent brick and stucco Italianate hotel entrance and you’re following in the footsteps of some extraordinary guests. Since opening in 1860 to serve first-class rail passengers, the hotel has entertained the likes of Charles Dickens, Cecil Rhodes and Lillie Langtry. It is a hotel of many firsts and was the first hotel built to specifically serve the many rail travellers to the city. It is now a modern, stylish and well equipped hotel set in the heart of this historic city. There is a great bar and restaurant and all of the rooms are stylishly appointed. There is a lift available.

Day 1

After joining the coach at one of our local pick-up points, we head north towards historic Chester with convenient coffee/tea stops en route. We expect to arrive at the centrally located and beautifully appointed Hallmark Hotel in the late afternoon. Check-in, unpack and then maybe pop out for a stroll to stretch your legs after the journey? Return to the hotel for a delicious dinner and then the rest of the evening is yours to enjoy!

Days 2-4

Enjoy a tasty traditional English breakfast every morning along with free time to explore Chester on your own. In addition, make sure you join us on our fabulous INCLUDED excursion to Liverpool and our trip on the Llangollen Steam Railway along with our visit and entrance to historic Plas Newydd House. Return to the hotel every evening to enjoy delicious dinners and more opportunity to walk out and explore Chester by night.

Day 5

After a final breakfast, it is sadly time to make our way home. After stopping for a coffee/lunch break, we continue homewards.

Llangollen Steam Train

Llangollen Railway is the only standard gauge heritage railway in North Wales and is located beside the historic Dee Bridge (built in 1345), in the centre of Llangollen town. The journey is a relaxing 10 miles travelling through the stunning Dee Valley to the lovely town of Corwen the crossroads of North Wales. This lovely journey travels on the section of the line which in its day went from Ruabon to Barmouth taking people to the seaside on holiday and transporting various goods including slate and chemicals. It is a true taste (and sound!) of yesteryear. The line follows the picturesque River Dee, classed as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), for its entire length, passing through some of the finest natural beauty North Wales has to offer.

Plas Newydd House

Set on the shores of the Menai Strait amidst breathtakingly beautiful scenery, this elegant house was redesigned by James Wyatt in the 18th century. The 1930s restyled interior is famous for its Rex Whistler association and contains his exquisite romantic mural and the largest exhibition of his works. A military museum contains relics from the First Marquess of Anglesey’s tenure, who commanded the cavalry at the Battle of Waterloo. There’s a fine spring garden and Australasian arboretum, with an understorey of shrubs and wild flowers, an Italianate-style summer terrace, and massed hydrangeas which give autumn colour. From the house and grounds, the views across the Menai Strait to the mountains of Snowdonia are simply stunning

Full of history, culture and friendly people, Liverpool is the ideal destination to discover and enjoy. A World Heritage site with a wonderful collection of museums, galleries, shopping and dining, there really is something for everyone in this fantastic city. Liverpool is there for you to enjoy as you want it.
