Gretna is a planned town built during the First World War while nearby Gretna Green is famous for being the marriage capital of the UK. The town of Gretna was built during the First World War to provide homes for 30,000 employees of a munitions factory that was the biggest in the world - an incredible nine miles long! Gretna Green is famous for marriages with around 5,000 couples tying the knot here and in Gretna every year. Historically it was to Gretna Green that young English runaway couples eloped so that they could be married ‘over the anvil’ from the age of 16. Gretna Green Famous Blacksmiths Shop, where couples have come to marry since 1754, is still here and there are lots of place to shop and eat out whilst you are here..

Gretna Green Hall Hotel

An Historic Marriage House, Gretna Hall is still a family business that has been at the heart of Gretna Green weddings since 1886. Originally built in 1710 as a private manor house, Gretna Hall is set in 10 acres of beautiful gardens; offering all the character of a substantial historical building, with all the comfort you would expect from a contemporary hotel. There is a lovely bar and restaurant and all of the bedrooms are stylishly furnished.

Lake Ullswater, Keswick & Lowther Castle

Today will see us travelling to Lowther Castle and Gardens – Winner of Cumbria’s Large Visitor Attraction of the year 2018 – and a jewel of the English Lake District. Lowther Castle if full of stories – come and explore some of them with us! We then move on to Lake Ullswater where we’ll have an hour’s cruise on one of Ullswater ‘Steamers’ heritage vessels. This eight-mile cruise takes in the expansive vistas of England’s highest mountains. At the North Lakes, we pass Bassenthwaite Lake Nature Reserve, skirting Skiddaw before stopping at the pretty market town of Keswick. Make sure that you don’t miss the Keswick Museum which has hardly changed since Victorian Times and houses manuscripts from some of the famous Lake Poets!

Guided tour of Hadrian’s Wall

Hadrian’s Wall is the most important monument built by the Romans in Britain. It stretches seventy-three miles from Wallsend near Newcastle, across the neck of England to Bowness-on-Solway in North West Cumbria, and stands today as a reminder of the past glories of one of the world’s greatest empires. It was built in the 120’s AD and because it was not an impenetrable barrier, forts were built at seven mile intervals, Milecastles (small guard posts) were built at one mile intervals, and two turrets (towers) were placed between each pair of Milecastles, for observation. In front of the wall lay a ditch, except where the crags made it unnecessary. The wall crossed three rivers, and bridges were built and on this fascinating guided tour you will be able to see for yourself how the Romans built things to last!

Dumfries

Dumfries is ripe for strolling. Laced by atmospheric lanes and quarters, you never know what you’ll find. It can be a hidden garden, a centre for contemporary visual art and craft, a delightful parkland golf course, a confectionary shop, a bustling farmers’ market, a Palladian mansion, museums that are treasure troves of local history, lovely, red-hued sandstone bridges, or a medieval stronghold. Need we go on? Wherever you end up, it’s probably going to be a place which will steal your heart.
