Great excursion options...

For a short Easter break, we think we've packed a lot in! On this tour, not will you get the opportunity to visit the romantic city of Bruges, but you'll also have the opportunity to pick up some bargains at Cite Europe, one of France's most popular shopping centres.

Our base for this holiday is one of the loveliest places to go in France, Lille. This pretty city combines culture, gastronomy, great shopping and a unique atmosphere stemming from the city’s history as part of French Flanders.

Nowhere is this more evident than in the impressive Grand’Place or Place du Général-de-Gaulle in the heart of Vieux Lille. A natural meeting point for locals, this vast square is also a veritable architectural showcase, with buildings ranging in date from the 17th to the 20th centuries – eight of them listed historic monuments.

Especially noteworthy is the 17th-century Stock Exchange or Vieille Bourse, comprising 24 ornate little houses, all identical, clustered around a courtyard. Step through one of the four arches to browse the secondhand book market hosted here, and to watch games of chess in action – or even join in with one yourself! Also on the Grand’Place, the Théâtre Du Nord occupies the former Grand’Garde, used to house soldiers from the sentry guard, while the Déesse (Goddess) statue commemorates the city’s resistance to the Austrian siege of 1792.

The vibrant hub of the liveliest of French cities, this square with origins as a medieval wheat market continues to be the focal-point for local celebrations and events. Nice places in France don’t come much more charming than Vieux Lille and the Grand Place – just stroll its cobbled lanes or stake a place one of the countless pavement cafés to discover this for yourself.

ibis Styles Lille Centre Gare Beffroi Hotel

This 3-star hotel is located close to the Lille Flandres train station and has a colourful, contemporary and stylish feel with a lovely bar/lounge area to relax and share a drink in. The rooms are modern and very well equipped as you would expect in a modern Ibis Hotel. It is really well located and only a 10 minute walk away from Lille’s magnificent Grand Place and the pedestrian streets of the capital of Flanders.

Day 1

Depart South Wales and head towards Dover for our short sea crossing to France and onwards to Lille. Check in to our hotel and take some time to explore this lovely city on your own. Maybe have a drink in the bar before heading out for the evening to enjoy everything that this pretty, historic city has to offer.

Day 2

Enjoy a tasty breakfast this morning and the day is yours to do as you please. You can either stay in Lille or you can join us on a fasinating excursion to picturesque Bruges. Either are a great choice and you are assured of a fasinating and highly enjoyable day.

Day 3

After a final breakfast, we check-out and make our way to the amazing shopping centre close to the channel ports that is Cite Europe. See if you can pick up a bargain before re-joining your coach and the ferry back to Dover and then on to South Wales.

Bruges, once a flourishing trading centre, with its wealthy merchants homes built lovingly and to last. Through time, the city slumbered as a forgotten backwater, but its rich heritage and picture-postcard beauty could not remain hidden forever and inevitably Bruges was rediscovered as an unspoilt treasure. Visitors now flock to explore the cobbled streets and old guild houses in the Market Place, but it is the canals, with their ancient humped bridges, that create its unique character and which earned it the title of the ‘Venice of the North’. Small enough to explore by foot, horse-drawn carriage or canal boat, there is much to see - museums and art flourish, good restaurants abound and pretty shops sell lace, Flemish tapestry, specialty beers and chocolates…wonderful!

Cite Europe

Located right next to the Channel Tunnel, Cité Europe is an international shopping centre. Both a seaside shopping centre and an essential tourist stop for those crossing the Channel, Cité Europe has over 120 shops, a Carrefour hypermarket, a 12-screen cinema, a bowling alley and an incomparable “Gourmet City” with about fifteen restaurants.

Designed by architect Paul Andreu as a great arc of light passing through an archway symbolising the tunnel, a real beacon in the landscape of Eurotunnel’s French terminal, Cité Europe provides a moment of relaxation with clear spaces, open to the sky, making it a warm, welcoming and bright place.
