Christmas at Harewood House
It’s ‘after hours’, the doors are closed and it’s the moment when Harewood House really comes alive. The statues are singing, the paintings are gossiping and there’s hustle and bustle both above and below stairs, with the anticipation of an important guest in the run up to a truly festive Christmas. Open the doors, look under the stairs, listen out for chatter and gossip and follow the music as Yorkshire’s most exciting country house presents its interpretation of Christmas. With workshops, festive-themed music, events, market weekends, cooking demonstrations and, of course, an opportunity to meet with Father & Mrs Christmas, there’s much to explore during the festive season at Harewood.
Keighley & Worth Valley Railway
Step back in time on The Railway Children’s Railway in the heart of Brontë Country and enjoy a steam filled action packed day out! Keighley & Worth Valley Railway runs like a ribbon though Brontë Country, where you can expect to take in some of the most breathtaking and famous landscapes in the world. A windswept land of heather and wild moors - it is hardly surprising that this area became the inspiration for the classic works of the Bronte sisters, Charlotte, Emily and Anne.
The Railway has appeared in many TV and film productions including Sherlock Holmes, Peaky Blinders, Disney’s 2019 remake of Dumbo and many more. Perhaps most famously, the Railway, and in particular the charming station at Oakworth, were used as the location for the classic 1970 film The Railway Children. Step back in time and relive this well-loved tale as you watch the vintage steam trains puff their way in and out of the valley.
Set on the south bank of the River Aire, Leeds is famous for many things including its football team but the most popular attraction for many visitors is the Royal Armouries, which houses the national collection of arms and artillery. Across the river, the redeveloped industrial area around Call Lane is famed for bars and live music venues under converted railway arches. For those looking for a bargain or to pick up some traditional local Yorkshire fayre, then Leeds Kirkgate Market could be for you, featuring hundreds of indoor and outdoor stalls. Whatever your interest, though, Leeds will provide you with a fascinating experience that will live long in the memory.
