Bute was known to the Vikings as Rothesay, a name now applied to the island's main settlement. We'll also spend a day exploring the island, renowned for its glorious gardens, grand architecture and friendly locals and have plenty of time at the town of Rothesay itself.
West Coast Scenic Tour plus Lochgoilhead
We hope for clear skies today as we head west traversing the 'Rest & be Thankful' pass, which offers spectacular views on a good day. We find ourselves at Lochgoilhead, a small village situated at the northern end of Loch Goil, a sea loch running into Loch Long. If this place looks a little familiar to you, it could be beacuse parts of the James bond film 'From Russia with Love' were filmed in Lochgoilhead - Sean Connery stayed at the Goil Inn.
Cowal Peninsular (half day)
Flanked by Loch Long and Loch Fyne, the Cowal Peninsula is a landscape of contrasts, from Munros to seaside villages. Much of Cowal is covered by The Argyll Forest Park. The Isle of Bute lies to the south of Cowal, across the Kyles of Bute. We take a morning scenic drive around the area... keep a look out for red squirrels and the rope bridges put in place to protect them from road traffic!
