Best known as the birthplace of England’s most famous bard, William Shakespeare, Stratford-upon-Avon is a pretty historic market town situated on the banks of the River Avon and a popular tourist destination attracting over three million visitors a year. With its beautiful surroundings, a wide range of tourist attractions and great shopping, it’s not hard to see why this town is such a hit with coach trip visitors. Cotswolds Villages: Bourton-on-the-Water, Moreton-in-March & Stow on the Wold
One of the delights of visiting the Cotswolds is exploring the different areas, each with its own identity. But all have those defining Cotswold features: golden stone, lively market towns and rolling hills, the ‘wolds’. Explore these English villages of honey-coloured stone and take in splendid, lively market towns.
Bourton-on-the-Water straddles the River Windrush with its series of elegant low bridges beside neat tree-shaded greens and tidy stone banks. Standing back from the river are traditional Cotswolds buildings, many of which are now tourist shops for the day-trippers and visitors.
Moreton-in-Marsh is one of the largest market towns in the area which has had a traditional market since the 13th century. Every Tuesday there is still a busy market with around 200 stalls selling all sorts of produce and knick-knacks. There are also several pubs, tea shops and restaurants around the town.
Nearby Stow-on-the-Wold is another iconic Cotswold destination, located high up on the Roman Fosse Way and offering fabulous views from its position as the highest of the Cotswolds towns.
