Exeter (stop en route to Torquay)
Exeter is an ancient city on the River Exe in southwest England. Dating back to the Roman era, the Exeter City Walls surround its centre and Gothic Exeter Cathedral. Exeter Castle, a Norman landmark, overlooks leafy Northernhay and Rougemont Gardens. There is also great shopping in Princesshay and Gandy Street. Totnes is a charming Devon town with a bustling main street and a regular market (which you will be able to visit on Saturday) situated in the Dart Valley running through, The town is surrounded by woodlands, grassy fields and riverside walks. It is built on a hill rising up from the Dart. The old warehouses on the wharf have been restored preserving the character of the place.
An historic town, with its roots in Elizabethan times, Totnes has a reputation for welcoming alternative lifestyles. Consequently it is a place full of contrasts. It is the second oldest borough in England, and is full of interesting diversions for the visitor. There are museums, a riverside with steamer quay and a multitude of historic buildings, with examples of properties dating back to Norman, Medieval and Tudor times. Overlooking one of the finest natural harbours in the UK, Dartmouth has a strong maritime heritage and is packed with narrow lanes, stairways and corridors, Medieval and Elizabethan streets. The town has fine restaurants, as well as arts, antiques and craft shops just about everywhere.
Plymouth itself combines the vibrancy of a modern city with the heritage of an historic port. Plymouth Hoe is always a big hit with visitors and certainly offers the best view in town from Smeaton’s Tower Lighthouse. In the Elizabethan Barbican are the Mayflower Steps, from where the Pilgrim Fathers famously set sail for America and the rest of the city is full of interesting and welcoming shops, bars and restaurants.
