Aberystwyth, meaning the mouth of the river Ystwyth, is known locally simply as ‘Aber’. As a university town, it's a melting pot of cultures and ideas: museums, archives and galleries reveal a depth of heritage waiting to be discovered. A visit to Aberystwyth is quite impossible without a stroll on the mile long Victorian promenade. The seafront also boasts the oldest pier in Wales (it was built in 1864) for another great vantage point. The seafront and streets still retain much of their Georgian and Victorian character, with bow windows, colonnaded doorways and elegant proportions, whilst there are street names that suggest that the town is even older, which indeed it is. The town is also the capital of Celtic culture, and home to the National Library complex which houses the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies and the base of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historic Monuments of Wales. With lots of lovely independent shops in the bustling town centre, the resort offers something for everyone to explore and enjoy.
