Mid Wales

Steam through Mid Wales for the best view of its lush green countryside.

Mid Wales is the green heart of Wales. The clear seas, bright harbours and hidden coves of the Ceredigion coastline give way to red kite-filled skies, busy market towns and dramatic hill walks. Within the region of Mid Wales you'll find Ceredigion and Powys. Spectacular scenery, devilish legends, a proud maritime past and passionately proud locals: from mountains to mines. You’ll discover prehistoric forts, mighty castles and living remnants of its industrial heritage. Since its construction in the 12th century Cardigan Castle has seen an assault by Vikings in 1138 and Wales’ first Eisteddfod in 1176. Trains played an important part in keeping this area on the move. Ore and timber once travelled on narrow gauge lines such as the Vale of Rheidol Railway, which was the last steam-powered railway to be owned by British Rail. Now run by a charitable trust, the railway has been restored to its former glory and is one of the best ways to see the lush green countryside that lies inland from Aberystwyth.

Brecon & Canal Cruise Day Trip

Tue, 30 Jul 2024

We journey through the Brecon Beacons, with its picture perfect reservoirs, to Brecon, a beautiful cathedral town with views of the majestic mountains all around. We have some free time to explore the local shops and attractions as well as enjoying a cruise on the Monmouth and Brecon Canal. This historical waterway and fantastic feat of engineering (built before roads and railways) takes us on a scenic ride through a canal lock and over an aqueduct which carries the canal over the River Usk. We rejoin the coach at 17:00 to make our way back to South Wales.

Please be aware that the canal boat operates in all weather conditions, providing a unique experience regardless of the elements. While there are windows to enjoy the views, please note that there is no air conditioning, so it may feel warm on particularly sunny days.

Gwili Steam Railway & Carmarthen Day Trip

Wed, 7 Aug 2024

Take a trip back in time and explore the Welsh countryside with a journey on Gwili Railway, one of the UK’s most picturesque preserved lines. Set in beautiful countryside with abundant wildlife, the line follows the River Gwili on a steady uphill journey through farmland and wooded hillsides.

Beyond the locomotives, history and scenery, the railway’s appeal lies in the friendliness and enthusiasm of the volunteers who maintain the railway and operate the services. They’re justly proud of the part they play in recreating the golden age of steam and their love of the railway is infectious -they’ll be happy to regale you with information and stories about Gwili and its historic locomotives.

We also spend some time in the oldest town in Wales, Carmarthen. Situated on the River Towy, this county market town is packed with history and reputedly the birthplace of Merlin. For food and shops, try St Catherine's Walk or the indoor market.

We rejoin the coach around 16:30 to make our way back to South Wales.
